There is a responsibility that comes with operating in places as wild and beautiful as those we call home. It is not enough to simply exist within these landscapes. We must protect them, support them, and ensure that our presence leaves a positive mark, both now and for generations to come.
At Time + Tide, this philosophy shapes every decision. From the way our camps and lodges are built to how we engage with the communities around us, the intention is always the same: to tread lightly, while creating meaningful and lasting impact.
Our light footprint begins with energy. At Time + Tide Tsara Komba, solar power now plays a central role in daily operations. Being in a remote environment, where infrastructure is minimal, harnessing the sun allows us to operate efficiently without placing strain on natural resources. It is a simple, thoughtful solution that aligns with the island and our values. Working quietly in the background, it ensures that the experience for guests remains seamless, while significantly reducing our environmental impact.
Equally important is our approach to waste, particularly single-use plastics.
In places where waste management systems are limited, the responsibility falls even more heavily on those who operate there. We have taken deliberate steps to remove single-use plastics from Tsara Komba, replacing them with reusable and sustainable alternatives. From glass water bottles in the suites to carefully considered supply chains, each choice is made with longevity in mind. It is these small, consistent actions that add up over time.
Beyond the lodge, the work of the Time + Tide Foundation extends this commitment into the communities that surround us. True conservation is as much about people as it is about landscapes, and supporting local communities is central to creating a sustainable future.
One of the most meaningful ways this takes shape is through education. The Foundation is actively involved in supporting schools in the regions where we operate, creating opportunities for children to learn, grow, and imagine new possibilities for their future. Plans are in place to build a new school in the village of Antrema. In the meantime, the Foundation is focused on providing ongoing support to the existing primary school, strengthening resources and contributing to a more consistent learning environment.
Alongside education, access to healthcare is another essential part of community wellbeing.
The Foundation has expanded its medical support across remote coastal regions, including Nosy Komba. With nearly 4,000 consultations delivered in 2025 alone, and a dedicated nurse now based in Antrema Village, access to care is becoming both closer and more consistent. The construction of a new health post in the village marks an important next step, creating a space for primary care, maternal support, and ongoing treatment. These efforts not only ease the practical challenges of accessing healthcare, but also bring a sense of reassurance and stability to the community.
These are not just buildings or projects, but foundations for opportunity. By investing in education and health, we are helping to nurture the next generation of custodians for these extraordinary places. The impact of this work is far-reaching. It opens doors, strengthens communities, and creates a deeper connection between people and the natural world around them. It ensures that conservation is not an external concept, but something that is understood, valued, and carried forward locally.
Guests may not always see the solar systems powering their stay, or the careful logistics behind reducing waste, or the ongoing efforts in nearby communities. And that is as it should be.
There is a gentle balance to all of this. The experience remains effortless, immersive, and deeply connected to place. Yet behind the scenes, these layers of intention are what make that experience sustainable. In the end, it is a shared journey. Every stay, every visit, every moment spent in these landscapes contributes to something larger. Together, we are part of a story that protects what is precious, supports what is local, and ensures that these places continue to inspire for generations to come.
